Since 1978, the Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) program, sponsored by ISACA®, has been the globally-accepted standard of achievement among information systems (IS) audit, control, and security professionals. The technical skills and practices that CISA promotes and evaluates are the essential proficiencies required for successful IS auditing. The CISA designation is recognized by every major industry around the world as a preferred certification for IS audit, control, and security professionals. The CISA program is designed to assess and certify individuals in the IS audit, control, assurance, and security professions who demonstrate exceptional skill and judgment. To earn and maintain the CISA designation, candidates are required to:

> Submit verified evidence of a minimum of five years of professional IS audit, control, assurance and/or security work experience.
> Submit verified evidence of a minimum of five years of professional IS audit, control, assurance and/or security work experience.
> Submit verified evidence of a minimum of five years of professional IS audit, control, assurance and/or security work experience.
> Attain a passing score on the CISA exam.
> Adhere to the ISACA Code of Professional Ethics.
> Successfully complete an average of forty (40) continuing professional education hours each year.

The CISA exam is a comprehensive four-hour test which is offered all over the world on the same day twice each year, in June and December. The purpose of this exam is to test a candidate’s knowledge and ability to evaluate and apply IS audit principles and practices in a number of applicable content areas.

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has accredited the CISA certification program as specified in ISO/IEC 17024:2003. ANSI, a private, nonprofit organization, accredits organizations to serve as third-party product, system, and personnel certifiers.
